SUMMARY:EKG Youth Heart Screening- Bishop Blanchet High School
DESCRIPTION:Every year\, thousands of kids die when their heart suddenly and unexpectedly stops beating. Known as Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA)\, this syndrome can happen without symptoms or warning signs. The Puget Sound alone loses three to five kids each year.\nIt’s not a heart attack. SCA is an abnormality in the heart’s structure or electrical system that can be detected with a simple EKG. But EKGs are NOT a part of your teen’s annual well-child or pre-participation sports physical. All students are at risk\, not just athletes.\nNick of Time Foundation and a medical team of local health professionals will perform noninvasive EKG screenings without needles or X-ray exposure.\nEvery student also receives “hands-only” CPR and AED training and is taught how to respond in an emergency. SUMMARY:EKG Youth Heart Screening- Bishop Blanchet HS
DESCRIPTION:Our EKG youth heart screening is community-based and offered in partnership through local high schools. It is available to students ages 14-24 during the school day. Each screening requires approximately 125 volunteers comprised of laypeople and medical practitioners. A core team from the University of Washington Center for Sports Cardiology is always present. The screening includes a medical and family history\, 12 lead ECG\, heart sounds physical\, “hands-only” CPR/AED training and limited echocardiogram as needed. Cardiologists and sports medicine physicians are on site using the International Criteria to evaluate the ECG and ECHO exams.
